Determine lengths of belts
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

B&B offered to pre cut lengths of belts for us to help reduce fallout from them being cut too short. We need to get lengths of each belt to send to them

@west are you sure this is a good idea? If i had to guess the reason our supplier is asking to do this is because it's cheaper to use belt by the foot, which is spiral cut and at one point we decided against that because the teeth will be angled ever so slightly. Secondly, we don't see high fallout from belts just getting cut too short accidentally, they are too short because they were torn during installation because it's a PITA to tension them with pliers on the x and z axis. Getting cut-to-length belts won't solve that problem.

It would same some time on our end, if anything lets find out the lengths, send it to them, they will quote us and we can always pass

@kent - we have seen a HUGE fall out on belts being cut incorrectly since the start of Mini 2... I can get numbers later today.

@jessica I'm aware... I'm not sure you read what I wrote so I'll put it again:

we don't see high fallout from belts just getting cut too short accidentally, they are too short because they were torn during installation because it's a PITA to tension them with pliers on the x and z axis. Getting cut-to-length belts won't solve that problem.

Furthermore, the easiest way I have found to tension the belts on mini 2 x and z is to leave extra length that can be wrapped around the pliers to help distribute the load and prevent the belt ripping, and then cutting the excess off after tensioning. If we get belts that are cut exactly to length, this method won't work anymore. If we add extra length so that it will work, we have to cut the excess which sort of defeats the purpose of having a pre-cut belt.

The fallout is clearly a problem, one that we tried to prevent, and have been logging issues with but I don't think pre-cut belts are going to solve anything, and might even make things worse. I have to recommend against doing this. If y'all still want to do it, we will have to create a change order.

@kent we would send them the length of the belt with a little extra for tensioning (which they strongly recommended against the current way we are doing it)

X Y and Z belt lengths are 720mm
