connect small features to perimeter on first layer
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Connecting small features to the perimeter on the first layer helps greatly with first layer adhesion of those features, as well as a reduction in stringing, retractions, and overall first layer time.
Here is an example of small features on the first layer before:

Here is an example when small slots are drawn from the nearest wall to the small feature:

In the slotted example above, the small slots are 100 microns wide by 250 microns tall.

Here's another example:

The above screenshot shows 1 solid perimeter line excluding the lettering, all of the small hole features connected

Working on applying this and other improvements/fixes for better slicing to all printed parts in the quiver repo. Required fixes vary from removing unintended intersections from holes, remodeling legacy parts, removing unnecessary overhangs, fixing walls too thin to print where able, and adding the strategic slots described above for a better first layer. Working closely with @EricNugent to ensure the best printability of these parts

@west Can you please ensure your FreeCAD is setup with the following values? I'm seeing a lot of parts that have very choppy circular features

@logan do a fresh pull

@west I'm about 2 thirds of the way through going through all the printed parts... I cant start over now

west added a comment.Nov 6 2018, 11:54 AM

All the printed parts have been updated

So I have to start over with applying the fixes noted above?

logan added a comment.Nov 6 2018, 12:00 PM

@west I will double clone and check everything against the new models before pushing these fixes. Thanks

No need, I pulled the changes I made to models out and will revert.

The above fixes might help with the small features but isnt it creating islands for parts and may cause warping and prints pulling up anyway? or is the line connecting the features to the perimeter small enough that it will bond with itself?

logan added a comment.Nov 6 2018, 12:04 PM

@west FreeCAD looks to be correcting the circular edges when I apply a change, so I will just have to pull over the parts I'm not changing. NBD

@west The latter is true, the gap is so small that the lines lay right next to eachother just like an inner/outer wall would.
