Update Probe Fail Message
Closed, ResolvedPublic

We have had a report about the confusing probe fail message, and the need to reset the machine. We would like to make this more user friendly, and self explanatory for newer users:

Probing failed
Please reset

Potential New:
Probing during auto-leveling failed
Please turn printer off/on, and ensure tool head nozzle(s) are clean

So they would be asked to ensure the nozzles are clean when the heaters fail to heat or when there is an USB read error? There is only one dialog box for all the errors.

We aren't able to create a couple of dialog boxes to handle common categories of errors?

Here is the standard dialog box for machine halted errors:

Please reset

The MESSAGE bit is a variable string that indicates the specific error. It can be up to 16 characters long. This limit comes from the Mini 2 and TAZ Redgum, which has a 16 character by 4 line display. The "PRINTER HALTED" and "Please reset" are not variable and apply for all errors including MAX_TEMP, MIN_TEMP, PROBE_FAILED, HOMING_FAILED.

The "PRINTER HALTED" and "Please reset" are also 16 characters long, because the Mini 2 and TAZ Redgum have the same 16 character limit, but unlike with the variable message, I *can* make the string slightly larger on the TAZ Pro. However, we need to make the string short enough so it can fit on the smaller display that is used on Kangaroo Paw, so it cannot be aritrarily long.

I feel that was a convoluted answer. Here are the constraints, as bullets:

  • The variable <MESSAGE> must work for all printers and thus is limited to 16 characters.
  • The strings "PRINTER HALTED" and "Please reset" must be applicable to all classes of printer errors.
  • These strings can be different between printers using the RepRap Discount display and printers using the touch panel, but the string used on the TAZ Pro must be short enough to fit properly on the smaller display used on Kangaroo Paw.

Thanks for the clarification.

  1. Regarding <MESSAGE>, Do we have the diagnostics precision to identify the difference between an auto-leveling failure and other failures? If so, then "Probing failed during auto-leveling" (35 char) for TAZ Pro will help the user.
  2. Can you list what all the error codes are?
  3. Does "Please reset" always mean turn the printer off and back on? If so, "Switch off/on" might be clearer
If so, then "Probing failed during auto-leveling" (35 char) for TAZ Pro will help the user.

This needs to be 16 characters, because the same message needs to work for Mini 2 and TAZ Redgum. If you try a probe fail on those printers, you will see the error message is exactly the same and there isn't room for more characters.

Can you list what all the error codes are?

They are MAX_TEMP, MIN_TEMP, PROBE_FAILED, HOMING_FAILED and USB_READ_ERROR. I don't know off the top of my head how they show up on the screen.

Does "Please reset" always mean turn the printer off and back on? If so, "Switch off/on" might be clearer

Yes, that would be a good change to make, I agree.

This would be more clear than "Switch off/on": "Power off & on". We use the term "power off/on" in our documentation so it'll be consistent.

Thanks Marcio.
I walked away from my print, went to a meeting, and when I came back it had this error message "Probing Failed". So I didn't know if it made it past auto-leveling or not, but nothing was printed. If it would have said "Leveling Failed" (15 CHAR), I would have known immediately what was wrong - probably dirty nozzles. Not sure if this terminology is helpful to others though.
thanks again for the education.

@Hob, @Orias: How about switching the text to:

Leveling Failed
Power on/off

This has the advantage of being 16 characters and fitting on the Mini 2 and TAZ Workhorse display as well as TAZ Pro, so it will work across all printers.

I don't know whether PRINTER HALTED really adds any info. Maybe:

Leveling Failed
To reset printer
power off/on

With probing/leveling failed, it leaves the user without an immediate solution to their state.

Would "Clean Nozzle(s)" be a more actionable error message for an ABL failure state?

@Orias: The problem currently is that only the first line can be specific to a type of error, and it can only be 16 characters.

Unless you want it to say "clean nozzle(s)" instead of "leveling failed". It would look like this:

Clean nozzle(s)
To reset printer
power off/on

Ahh, so it's a three line error message set? If so, it'd need to be:
if ABL fails, then: Clean Nozzle(s) > Reset needed > Power off/on

@TyTh, @Galadriel: Thoughts?
