@anolen We can do a mass update, but not sure on testing.

I have been taking this into consideration for all new profiles and for all edits coming my way, as far as making a mass change I am unsure, @karrad, any thoughts? I don't anticipate major issues if we approve this change for all profiles but as for a quick fix it might be an issue, each profile will have a different layer height and thus a different layer to activate the fan.

@anolen Is there a plan to change our existing profiles to activate the fan higher up?

We determined that the main culprit of drastic temp drops was low layer fan activation, this causes the air from the fan to hit the bed and reflect back up onto the heater block, after a few more layers there is a large enough gap between toolhead and bed that the air will flow outward. To fix you can increase your "Regular Fan Speed At Layer", this will give the printer a longer time for the fan to ramp up to the regular fan speed setting.

karrad reassigned T2039: Aerostruder Thermal Runaway Post Thermistor Fix from karrad to anolen.

@anolen Here we have reports of temperature drop issues on the Aerostruder add-on tool heads. These are reports after a known thermistor fix, so hardware should not be an issue. Can you please try to duplicate these, and see if profile tweaks will help prevent the temperature drops.

This is a Mini Aerostruder. RMA10661, previous case RMA10483. We soldered connections in previous RMA and user is still getting issues, we are replacing toolhead. User gave us a lot of great testing info below:

karrad closed T2223: Retract filament at the end of a print as Wontfix.

We have a retract before the tool head moves to parking position at the end of the print. We re-prime the Aerostruders and V3 Dual extruders to prevent a die swell jam that was reported early on. See T1724 for more details.

How far would we want to retract? Past the heatbreak or all the way out?
What if a user just wants to restart? If we back up and the filament cant get back into the heatbreak could make matters worse maybe?

@west I ran a TAZ aerostruder on TAZ6 with P21.00 I1.78 D61.93 and standard print profiles. With PLA the temp dropped from 205 to 199 then recovered within about 5 seconds. Then with ABS the temp dropped from 240 to 235 then recovered in about 5 or so seconds.

With P:19.83 I:1.53 D:64.16 for TAZ Aerostruders on a TAZ6, with standard print profiles I have been getting similar results. With PLA the temp dropped from 205 to 197 and recovered within 10 seconds, and ABS performed similarly

I tested PC-max and it dropped and came back up to target temp. Just for fun i set the hotend to 290 with fan at 100%. it dropped 12 degrees and stayed , i lowed the fan to S150 and it was able to recover

@west as you are aware the toolhead i was using wasn't a production unit. I acquired a production toolhead and tried this PID. When the fan comes on the temp dropped from 205 to 196 then recovered within 10 or so seconds. I will run some higher temp tests next

@tutley I ran this pid with ngen and it dropped a little then came back up, try the glad on my desk ( this only works for gladiola as far as I know so far)

tutley added a comment to T1750: Hot end wont hold temp.

@west im running this PID on gladiola with aerostruder and the standard high speed print profile for ABS, Marlin 1.1.5.75, When the fan comes on the temp drops from 240 to about 215 and has been at this temp for over 20 mins, so this PID doesnt seem to work well with higher temps

Feb 9 2018, 10:16 AM · Finch
west added a comment to T1750: Hot end wont hold temp.

@lansky I feel like that drop is way better than the 20 degree drop with it unable to hit the target temp again. @DaniAO is this a reasonable drop considering the increased airflow from the blower?

Feb 9 2018, 9:28 AM · Finch
lansky added a comment to T1750: Hot end wont hold temp.

@west Tested on Aerostruder Mini, Cura 2.6.66, Firmware 1.1.5.70 with those PID settings, Polylite PLA on standard. Temperature drops from 200 to 194ish when fan turns on. Takes maybe 30 seconds to get back up to temp.

I've had good success with this pid M301 P21.00 I1.78 D61.93 with pla so far, testing with other profiles. It drops 5-7 degrees then recovers
EDIT: works with ngen, so id imagine it would work with any other profile
